Product Carbon Footprint (CFP) is the quantification, in CO₂e terms, of the greenhouse gas emissions arising from the whole or specific stages of a product's or service's life cycle within a defined system boundary. As of July 2026, the currently applicable ISO 14067:2018 uses a life-cycle approach consistent with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and covers both full CFP and partial CFP studies. The standard focuses only on the climate change impact category; carbon offsetting and the external communication of CFP information are outside the scope of ISO 14067.

The correct relationship between CBAM and Product Carbon Footprint
The EU's definitive CBAM regime began on 1 January 2026. Legal CBAM declaration and certificate obligations rest mainly with the authorised CBAM declarant in the EU — the importer or, where applicable, the indirect customs representative. A Turkish producer, however, may supply facility and embedded-emissions data to its EU customer, particularly if actual emission values are to be used. The CBAM embedded-emissions calculation is not a direct copy of a CFP report prepared under ISO 14067: the CBAM calculation is separately governed by the specific methodology of Regulation (EU) 2023/956 Annex IV and, for the definitive period, Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2547. 2023–2025 transition period: CBAM's transition period ran from 1 October 2023 to 31 December 2025, focused on reporting, data collection and methodology preparation. 2026 definitive regime and the 50-tonne threshold: an annual total net mass threshold of 50 tonnes applies to the cement, iron and steel, aluminium and fertiliser sectors. Electricity and hydrogen imports have a special scope outside this mass threshold. 2027 declarations and certificates: purchase of CBAM certificates covering 2026 imports begins in February 2027. The deadline for the first annual CBAM declaration and corresponding certificate surrender is 30 September 2027. If the EU importer chooses to use actual values, verified embedded-emissions data may be requested from the third-country producer; alternatively, where permitted by legislation, the Commission's default values may be used. All else being equal, a lower embedded emissions figure can contribute to a reduced CBAM certificate obligation; the final obligation may also take into account other elements such as CBAM calculation rules and any carbon price effectively paid in the country of production. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and ISO 14067
ISO 14067:2018 is based on a life-cycle approach consistent with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. The product's relevant raw material, production, logistics, use and end-of-life processes are modelled according to the study's goal and system boundary.

The functional unit, system boundary, data quality, allocation approach, calculation model, uncertainty and results are documented in the technical report in a traceable manner. The new edition of ISO 14067 is still under development.
EPD / ISO 14025
EPD update — July 2026: the current international core standard for EPD programmes and EPDs is ISO 14025:2026; the 2006 edition has been withdrawn. An EPD presents multiple life-cycle environmental indicators, in addition to climate change, according to the relevant programme and PCR rules. EN 15804 is not the general standard for all EPDs; it relates specifically to the sectoral rules used for construction product EPDs. Although the product carbon footprint is linked to the GWP indicator in an EPD, the two results are not necessarily identical in every case due to the PCR, modules and system boundaries used. Verification: ISO 14064-3:2019 is applicable to the verification or validation of product greenhouse gas statements. For verification bodies, ISO 14065:2020 is the sectoral application of ISO/IEC 17029:2019 for environmental information. Whether accreditation is mandatory depends on the relevant programme, customer requirement or legislation. For CBAM actual emissions data, CBAM's own verification and accreditation provisions apply separately.
