Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that Türkiye’s National Energy 2040 vision will be presented in Istanbul on 5 November. According to the ministry’s announcement dated 26 October, the vision envisages around $100 billion in electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure investment. He spoke at the electricity distribution sector’s first Innovation, Dissemination and Entrepreneurship Days event. [Source](https://enerji.gov.tr/haber-detay?id=31954)

A timetable for presenting the vision

Bayraktar said work was nearing completion on a new energy architecture extending to 2040, taking account of global energy developments and Türkiye’s future needs. He said energy independence required more than owning resources or increasing generation capacity: production, transmission, distribution and consumption needed to transform together. The approximately $100 billion figure is presented as an investment envisaged under the vision. The announcement does not provide a financing breakdown, project list or implementation timetable for that amount. [Source](https://enerji.gov.tr/haber-detay?id=31954)

Electricity demand is changing in scale and character

The minister described a period of increasing electricity use across industry, transport, buildings and agriculture. He identified the spread of electric vehicles, electrification of production processes, artificial intelligence applications and expanding data centres as developments that would change demand. His message was that producing more electricity alone would not be enough: electricity would also need to be managed through a smarter, more flexible, efficient and digital system. Grids, storage and domestic software

According to Bayraktar, growth in solar and wind power plants, electric vehicles and industrial electricity requirements means grids must adapt. He said the energy transition could not be assessed solely through power plant investment; transmission and distribution infrastructure, storage capacity, digital technologies and system management capabilities needed to develop together. He also expressed an ambition for domestic software to be developed and widely used in distribution infrastructure, with systems protected against cyberattacks. These statements describe objectives, not newly announced legal obligations. [Source](https://enerji.gov.tr/haber-detay?id=31954)

Grids and financing on the COP31 agenda

Bayraktar said electricity’s share of Türkiye’s final energy consumption had risen from 15% in 2002 to 21% today, reaching 30% in industry and 33% in buildings. He said strengthening electricity grids would be a main energy-transition topic on Türkiye’s COP31 agenda, with the country hosting the conference in Antalya on 9–20 November. The stated aim is to expand international cooperation on distribution grid modernisation, digitalisation, renewable energy integration and financing for grid investment.
